Exhibition experiment

At night I painted the pulp and in the morning some of the paint wasn't dry yet so I think when we pour water the paint will flow to. I have put together all the things on the first Saturday when Mahendra and Mark went to my house. In the morning I put a layer of aquaproof on the experiment that is why I was late to school. Then I brought my groups experiment to school and brought it back to fix it. We got inputs from our friends and also from the teacher. We have to use sponges to dry the water when it is in the sea then we can use that water to be used again and again. This Saturday Mahendra and Mark will come to my house to fix the experiment. Maybe Putri could come. Before that time I will try to do the things for what is going to be put on the board. At school we already made the plan. There are lots of inputs from our friends. One of them is "You have to focus on one thing rather then two" (Ayu) and "On each side put a hole so the water will flow down" (Jasper).

Melvin's test

I think the test was quite easy. But why can't I submit my test. I have to sign in first and I did it but always there's a message that "you have to resubmit. Your username must consist of only letters and numbers" and I did it but I still can't submit it?

What contributes to flooding

There are lots of things that contribute to floods. Humans are one of them and there are two more reasons which are nature and ecology. Humans contribute to cause flooding because humans cut trees down and trees can prevent flood. Humans also does global warming to make floods happening. Nature contributes to floods by sending heavy rains and because of global warming the icebergs are melting and causes sea level to rise. The ecological factor also contributes to floods because of erosion, deforestation and land conversion from trees to housing areas. So as you can see there are lots of causes of flood and we have to stop doing our contribution to flood. Trees can help to stop flooding because trees can help with two things. The first one is trees can absorb water and the second one is by holding soil with their roots and it also can prevent erosion.

This is what is what your house is going to look like if we don't prevent floods from now!

Newspaper article

Sebelum Petaka Semesta itu tiba.....

This article is about global warming. The ice bergs in Greenland is melting 2,5 kilometer cubic for the last 5 years. The temperature of the earth has risen 3-5 degrees in the last 100 years. The Himalayan mountains that is covered with snow for about 33.000 kilometer square will not be covered with snow in 2100. The snow in Kilimanjaro will finish in the year 2015 and the snow in the Alpen's will reduce 50-90%.This issue also effect Indonesia. The effect on Indonesia is we will have heavy floods. Even now the water levels in some places have risen 8-29 cm. If this is not anticipated almost 2000 islands in Indonesia will sink. This flood will cause lots of sickness and one of them is Gizi Buruk.

My group's second inquiry is Specific solutions to address flooding in the city. These are some solutions to address flooding in Jakarta:
(1) Stop converting parks, lakes and swamps into housing.
(2) Make people stop throwing rubbish anywhere they want.
(3) Plant more trees so when water comes down from Bogor or Puncak trees will hold the water and also soils.
(4)Make rivers deeper and wider.

Humans of course needs place to live but not to much. Because if you are going to make a residential place you need to have a land and usually that land is filled with trees. We know that trees can absorb water. So if we build to any residential place we cannot make it to big and to wide because the more land you use the more trees you cut and the less air you will breathe.

If people don't stop throwing rubbish wherever they want there will always be floods happening in Jakarta every rainy season. When you throw rubbish on the road it will land on streets. Then when it rains, the water will carry the trash. Water will always flow to lower places so the water will flow to gutters. If there are too many trash, the trash will block the way for water to get in the gutter so water will stay there and if there are too many water it will cause flood.

Trees help us with lots of things. They provide air for us to breathe, trees help us if there is water flowing it will absorb them and also the trees will also hold the soil so it doesn't flow with the water. If humans keep on doing illegal logging, we will have lass air and of course we will get more floods. When the water flows most of the water will be absorb by the trees and if there are no trees the water will flow really fast to the lower city or places. The soil also comes with the water but if there are lots of trees the soil will be hold by the trees and if there are no trees the rivers that are usually deep will be shallow because there are lots of mud inside it and the lower the river is the less water it can hold. And that causes flood.

So starting from now on we have to plant more trees because that really effects floods from happening. If we can't plant more trees then we have to make rivers wider and deeper. Because like I said before the deeper and wider the river is the more water it can hold. So from now on please do not contribute to make floods.

The Concepts

Our group chose the Responsibility and Connection. We chose the Responsibility concept because we are responsible of the causes of changes in the city. We also chose the Connection concept because floods connects to other things such as sicknesses like Dengue Fever.
